“PRESERVING NATURE SUSTAINING LIFE”
Building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Punjab through environmental awareness, conservation and community action.
“WORKING FOR HEALTHIER PUNJAB”
PUNJAB ENVIRONMENT FOUNDATION (PEF) is committed to creating awareness , encouraging responsible environmental practices and supporting meaningful action for the protection of our natural resources.
From water conservation and pollution awareness to sustainable agriculture and biodiversity, we believe that every individual and every community has a role to play in building a healthier and more sustainable future.

“PUNJAB’s GROUNDWATER: A WATER CRISIS BENEATH OUR FEET”
Punjab is facing increasing pressure on its underground water resources. Recent government assessments show that groundwater extraction remains higher than the amount of ground water that can sustainably extracted each year.
According to the 2025
Groundwater-resource assessment, Punjab extracted about 26.27 billion cubic meters (BCM) of groundwater annually, while its annually extractable groundwater resources was estimated at 16.80 (BCM).
Groundwater levels also vary significantly across the state. the central groundwater board’s 2025 monitoring recorded water level ranging from around 1.25 meters to more than 53 meters below ground level at monitored location.
The data highlights an important message: protecting groundwater today is essential for Punjab’s agriculture, drinking-water security and future generations.

“OUR FOCUS AREA”
Our small focus on same of the environmental challenges that directly affect our communities, health and future.
WATER => Protecting our precious water resources and promoting responsible water use for our present and future generation.
POLLUTION AND HEALTH => Creating awareness about environment pollution and its impact on the health and well-being of communities.
BIODIVERSITY AND NATURE => Promoting the protection of trees wildlife natural habitats and ecological heritage.
WASTE MANAGEMENT => Encouraging responsible waste practices through reduction , reuse, recycling and community participation.
CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT => Building awareness about environment change and encouraging action for a sustainable action.
“PUNJAB’S DECLINING GROUNDWATER”
Punjab is facing a serious groundwater challenge. Agriculture, particularly water-intensive crops, has placed increasing pressure on underwater water resources. As groundwater is extracted faster than it is naturally recharged, water level and declining in many parts of state.
“WHAT’S HAPPENIMG & WHAT CAN WE DO”
What’s happening?
Punjab’s groundwater levels are declining due to excessive extraction, increasing water demand, and water-intensive agricultural practices. Protecting groundwater today is essential for a sustainable future.
AGRICULTURAL PRESSURE
Agriculture plays an important role in Punjab’s economy, but it also places significant pressure on the state’s groundwater resources. Irrigation is essential for growing crops, and in many areas, farmer depend heavily on groundwater to meet their water requirements, particularly when rainfall is not sufficient.
The cultivation of water-intensive crops can increase the demand for irrigation. when groundwater is pumped continuously and the amount of water withdrawn is greater than the amount of naturally replenished, groundwater level can gradually decline. this can make it more difficult to access water in the future and increase the pressure on already limited resources.
Reducing this pressure requires a combination of responsible water use, efficient irrigation methods, improved water management, rainwater harvesting and greater awareness of sustainable farming practices. supporting approaches that use water more efficiently can help protect Punjab’s groundwater while maintaining agricultural productivity
OVER-EXTRACTION
Over extraction occurs when groundwater is pumped out faster than it can naturally be replenished. In Punjab, groundwater is an important resource of water for irrigation, households, and other needs. conti
